Hatfield and The North, National Health etc.

6-5-09 Hatfield & The North, National Health etc.

More Japanese CD re-issues! And a favorite Canterbury vein! But the thing about these Canterbury veins – where do you stop / start? The unifying threat would appear to be Dave Stewart of Egg. H&TN is Dave Stewart with Caravan members and some jazzers. National Health is the same, minus some of the Caravan guys. All of this stuff is circa ’73 – ’78. I believe the ‘era’ for this type of stuff ended when Alan Gowan passed away (he also worked with Hugh Hopper). This is all definitely thought of as “Progressive Rock” – and some of it is a tad jazzy. This kind of music is very popular with fans in Japan.

Yes, and please buy all three CD’s by Egg. And as many Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin CD’s as you can find! Oh, and Soft Heap. And perhaps the Khan “Space Shanty” CD. See how this stuff gets messy in it’s genealogy? Soft Machine, Matching Mole, Caravan too.

I was playing National Health in my car last Tuesday, and it sounded all really great to me - I'm so glad I got those re-issued CD's!

Thanks for reminding me of Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin! I jumped to their website and saw they finally have a new CD & EP out just a few weeks ago! Buy directly from them in their webstore.

Also, their entire back catalogue is now available as individual downloads so that now I can get tracks that were only on pricy JPN CDs that were comps of material that I already had! Brian - this is what you have been waiting for! Now I can finally get The Loco Motion.

"Dave Stewart & Barbara Gaskin" are the pop face of the Canterbury scene. All their Rykodisc CD's are excellent.

Thanks for the tip Jim! I've been monitoring their website for years and noted the "we're working on a new CD" announcement. I've also noted their download service but let me remind everyone that I have hard copies of almost all that material as I got a bargain or two on Ebay. Much of it is also available on U.S. iTunes. Also got the Euro CD5 of "Walking the Dog" from Fun records which has a remix of that track, and the "Locomotion" 12" and have digitized the two extended remixes. At least the last time I checked, what's not available for downloading are the extended mixes of "Leipzig" and "I'm In A Different World" along with the b-side "A World Of Difference", and the two Japan only bonus tracks from Spin called "Fear Is The Thief" and "McGroggan". Our good buddy Joe Castle has digital copies of all these tracks and has promised me a dub since last year, but I'm still patiently waiting. I would like to make everyone the ultimate Dave and Barbara rarities collection, but I want to wait until I have it all. Ron or Mark M., if you could give Joe a gentle reminder, I'm still interested!!

Re: Joe Castle

Who is Joe Castle? Was he at Ron-Kon?

Yes, Joe Castle was at Rok-Kon. He went on the strategic record strikes with us to Everyday Music. Big guy, kinda quiet - biggest stacks of anybody. I'll ask him to dig out those Gaskin / Stewart Japanese CD's and get the dub wagon going.
