Lounge Lizards / John Lurie

11-3-09 Lounge Lizards / John Lurie

I have been a fan of John Lurie / The Lounge Lizards since 1980 or so. I recently ran across both of my ticket stubs for the 2 x Lounge Lizards shows I saw – June 16, 1981 @ Whisky A-Go-Go ($5) and June 12, 1998 @ El Rey Theatre ($20). In 1981, I drank a lot at this show – but I recall it was rather good. I would’ve been 22 or so at that time, and they seemed a lot older than myself. In 1998, it seemed too good to be true that they were returning to Los Angeles to play. Mr. Lurie was very funny on stage, with great / amusing between-song banter.

And of course Mr. Lurie has expensive coffee table art books, too. Wonderful stuff. And he’s in those Jim Jarmusch films – even stranger, Mr. Lurie contributed to the soundtracks of some ‘straight’ films – “Get Shorty”, for example. Ever see “Fishing With John”? It’s on DVD. Amazing stuff.

We only have the great Marvin Pontiac album. Sue heard it on the college radio one day and it became a must have item. I have the great ad Mr. Lurie ran on VH-1 for "Voice Of Chunk" on video somewhere. The Lounge Lizards were on E'G so I should have checked them out when they first happened. He's one of those "someday" artists. I'd probably like most of his stuff a lot.

"hello, farmer!"

Good band, fun artist. I recommend almost everything they ever did. Some live CD's have sound quality issues, but they're hard to find anyway. I still have LL laser discs, even!
