Emerson & Lake

4-30-10 Emerson & Lake

I recently almost had the opportunity to see Keith Emerson & Greg Lake play live in Los Angeles. I couldn’t go to the show. But, yes, I have a lot of EL&P records, and…I think I have some of their solo material…

So, how do I feel about this stuff in 2010? I may have judged it too harshly in the 70’s – I finished with EL&P pretty early, with “Brain Salad Surgery”. Yes, it is progressive rock, but it was getting too popular, for me.

No, I think you hit it spot on. BSS was the certainly death throes of ELP. I still have a copy only to hear Toccata (their only King Crimson quality track) every now and then, but I've contemplated ridding myself of the CD (Atlantic 1st pressing, bought just out of curiosity to see if Karn Evil 9 was segued - it wasn't) and just buying the download of that track! Works vol. 1 & 2 was the bloated, reanimated corpse. Love Beach was the ghost of ELP future. It peaked at Trilogy for me. And I say forget Pictures at an Exhibition, too, while you're at it. ELP, Tarkus & Trilogy. More ELP than almost anyone needs. I would have passed on those tickets as well! Even free!

Tickets were free; I passed them along to someone who did go.

I remain fond of the first two EL&P albums.
