10-9-09 G: Genesis
I am fairly lukewarm on Genesis. I heard “Foxtrot” when it came out and was very impressed. But that’s where I started; I also like the album after it “Selling England By The Pound”. Then I lost the plot. I only keep a “Hits” CD for any post-’74 Genesis needs.

Despite my protesting that I am “lukewarm” on Genesis, I recently tried to get a copy for $150, of the UK CD boxed set #1, ostensibly to get SACD’s of the first 5 x Charisma albums. When / if I get the UK CD box, I’ll have some re-mastered CD’s to sell off! But amazon.com lied to me, and the
(Sound of ringing bell) – I was never much of a fan of “The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway”. Just couldn’t wrap my head around it. Still can’t, really. I feel the ame way about it that I felt about “Quadrophenia” by The Who – Uh, expensive double album. What’s this about? Ugh, this is too much to try and digest. Better play the Faust LP’s some more.

I'm pretty much in the same camp. I can quite happily enjoy anything up to and including "Lamb Lies Down," but after Gabriel left that was pretty much that, with the sole exception of the VIDEO for "Land of Confusion" with the Spitting Image puppets. Great video.
Phil Collins gets respect from me SOLELY for his drumming on the early Eno albums. That's it.
I've always been a big fan of everything up to and including "Lamb". I reckon that one came along at the perfect moment in my musical evolution, and of course seeing them perform the entire spectacle in concert had a huge impact on me. I still rank that show in my top five shows of all time.
I'm okay with some of the early Collins era, particularly the couple of LPs that still featured Steve Hackett. Way too much wimpy schlock carried them through the 80s and beyond.
I'd love a copy of that first five LPs box set if I could find one cheap. Since I do have a modest surround sound set-up, I'd love to hear what they did with the 5.1 mixes for those LPs, although I would never consider those versions definitive.
By the way, we have a friend who actually has a 5.1 audio set up in her very compact CAR. She says those DVD audio discs are mind blowing.
