I recently got the double CD “The Island Years” by John Cale – it covers all of the material (and then some) for “Fear”, “Slow Dazzle” and “Helen Of Troy” – his golden triangle of mid-70’s rock albums. There are some bonus tracks, too. And I deeply love “Paris, 1919” – the Rhino UK re-mastered CD with bonus tracks is excellent.

A short time after the aforementioned Island label albums, Mr. Cale started coming to Los Angeles to play live shows, mostly at the Whisky A-Go-Go. Probably due to chemical refreshment, those late 70’s shows were among the loudest things I ever witnessed. I blame my middle-aged hearing loss on those John Cale shows! I used to see two of these shows a night – and drive home from The Whisky – stone deaf!

Anybody remember the “Animal Justice” EP? That was sure swell.

I continued to follow Mr. Cale through the 80’s, with “Honi Soit”, “Caribbean Sunset” (where’s the CD of that one?) and others. I got the chance to meet him once, at a record store that a friend managed, getting most of my Cale LP’s signed. Neat.

I could never turn up more than a handful of music video by John Cale – there just never seemed to be any that was shown in the US (or Canada). When I went to Japan, I could easily find pirate Cale CD’s – but not all of his legit releases ever got Japanese releases, for some reason.

I’ve got two or three books about John Cale. And I’ve really liked some of his music made in the new century – “Black Acetate” is particularly good. DVD land? I have only found one, so far – “Fragments Of A Rainy Season” – a live show that’s pretty good.
