No I don’t yet have his most recent album, “Y Not” – I have yet to see it priced favorably.
I think it gets often overlooked that Ringo made some of the very best Beatles’ solo albums – “Ringo” and “Goodnight Vienna” (nice that both of those got the little paper album cover kami CD treatment in Japan!).
Les Quatre Guitaristes De L'Apocalypse-Bar "World Tour 1998" Recommended ReR GQ 1, 1995 - 2 LP's on one CD - "World Tour" and "Fin De Siecle" - I think they're French-Canadian (?)

I recently got the first three Jimi Hendrix Experience albums on CD – the re-mastered by Eddie Kramer editions, all of which come with a short film on DVD, about that particular album.Watching the DVD’s, I thought to myself: “Man, if I would’ve known everything that Eddie Kramer is saying about how they recorded these albums back then!” – I would’ve dug ‘em even more than I did.
So, what else did an 11-year-old Ron have in his record collection? My tastes in rock music back then were very much subject to the tastes of my brother and sisters.I could only really easily hear whatever was in my grasp – in my house (or the houses of my childhood friends).Bob Dylan records – everything from “Bringing It All Back Home” to “John Wesley Harding”; Big Brother & The Holding Company, the first album and ”Cheap Thrills”; Country Joe & The Fish, the first three albums; Jefferson Airplane “Surrealistic Pillow”, “After Bathing At Baxter’s” & “Crown of Creation”; Cream – as many LP’s & 45’s as we could find!; Frank Zappa: “Freak Out”, “Absiolutely Free”, “We’re Only In It For The Money”, “Lumpy Gravy” and “Cruisin’ With Ruben & The Jets” (the original version of which recently made it’s CD debut); Traffic – first three albums; Procol Harum – first four albums; The Moody Blues – “In Search Of The Lost Chord” and “Days of Future Passed”; The Fugs – all their ESP label albums; The Who “Happy Jack” and “The Who Sell Out” – my brother sent me “Direct Hits” from Germany, so it was then called “The Best Of” (Polydor Germany); The Doors – as many LP’s ads had been released at the time; Love – certainly the first three albums; “Cosmic Sounds of the Zodiac”; my sisters had records by Judy Collins and Leonard Cohen, too. And, of course, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.I recently played my mono UK LP’s for “Between The Buttons” and “Aftermath”; same goes for “Rubber Soul” and “Revolver”!Nice, clean UK mono original LP’s.
There were, of course, many more – but these are the ones that immediately came to my memory – what if I had to re-collect my “hippie” record collection?I would start with the above mentioned titles.White bread suburban “hippie” records. Not exactly counter-culture – but I do definitely remember having a hard time with my dad about Jimi Hendrix (being black).Good thing he didn’t examine any lyrics sheets back then (well, there weren’t many anyway) – but I think he would also have objected to some of the lyrics on records by Frank Zappa, Country Joe & The Fish or The Fugs.
Before the 1970’s, it really helped to know the above described music – it made you conversant with other similarly-inclined young people – but, of course, I was “too young” to ever really be accepted by real “hippies” (any who didn’t work at record stores).Part of my late 60’s experience was being treated nicely by “hippies” who worked at “hippie record stores” – the two names that spring to mind are Jack Baker at the Licorice Pizza, 131 W. 5th Street, downtown Long Beach and Wayne at Mundae Records on the Belmont Pier in Belmont Shores, Long Beach.Neither of these guys thought it was weird that a little kid wanted Wild Man Fisher records in 1969.
Special thanks to my dad and brother, both of whom drove me to Hollywood – in search of phonograph records (British imports!).
"The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper" - Recorded live at Bill Graham's Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA - September 26, 27 and 28, 1968 - Also featuring Elvin Bishop and Carlos Santana - Columbia C2K 64670, 1997 issue
Follow the population – that’s where the used books, LP’s and CD’s are!
I have lived in the Los Angeles area practically all of my life.I’ve been a serious record collector for about 40 years.I worked in the music business – on and off – from 1976 to about 1998 or so.I still sell stuff (LP’s & CD’s) on eBay.I’ve been writing about music since July, 2002.
Last February, Joe and I drove to Phoenix, AZ to look for used books, LP’s and CD’s.It was the closest large urban area that we could drive to where we hadn’t gone in search of used books, LP’s and CD’s before. We went to 18 records / book stores in a little over 2 days – both of us found a mountain of stuff.
So, in the very near future, he & I are going to drive to the San Francisco bay area in search of used books, LP’s and CD’s.Yes, I was just there a few weeks ago with my GF – but I don’t like to “make her wait” while I sift through the copious piles of used product. We’re going to go through 2 x Amoeba stores, 3 x Streetlight stores and probably 6 x Rasputin’s stores – and next Sunday, we’re going to attend the KUSF Rock’n Swap at McLaren Hall in San Francisco!
So, how does one prepare for a road trip with Joe?I had the Suzuki serviced a few weeks ago (20,000 mile oil change / service), I looked up a ton of stuff on Trip Advisor and Chowhound.I’ve looked at the 10-day weather forecast (dry, clear), the Caltrans website with road conditions etc.Over the course of the last few months, I’ve burned a ton of CD’s.
I think the underlying thought here is that both Joe and I feel like this year will be the last time he & I will be able to drive for a few hours and find used books, LP’s and CD’s in another large urban area. The stores are dropping like flies.Even bookstores in Berkeley and San Francisco are closing! How many of those stores in Phoenix will be there the next time we go there?Streetlight already closed their 24th St. S.F. store, and Rasputin closed their Newark store.I expect Bascom Ave. in San Jose will support both Streetlight and Rasputin stores, as Telegraph Ave. in Berkeley will support both Amoeba and Rasputin stores.
But what about the outlying stuff? Will it still be there the next time he & I have the urge to go foraging for used books, LP’s and CD’s?Also on the books:Yet another visit to Portland, OR. – another city where the used books, LP’s / CD’s stores have vastly changed – even over the short amount of time I have been going up there! No more 23rd street Music Millennium!I’ll be OK as long as Everyday Music is still there!
So, folks…I’m off on a “buying trip” with Joe.I’ll be back Monday night May 10, so likely my next post won’t be until Tues. May 11, 2010.As always, thanks for reading my stuff.
I recently mail-ordered a Genesis CD boxed set from England. The idea was to get the first 5 x Charisma albums as SACD’s.
I first heard Genesis on KPFK-FM about summer / fall of ’72 – probably something from “Foxtrot” (“Watcher Of The Skies”?“Willow Farm”?) and I was impressed – something between The Moody Blues – King Crimson – Procol Harum – hey, they were really using their mellotron!
It was easy enough to find an LP of “Foxtrot” when I went looking – it was at the first hippie record I went to.I poured over the cover…and I liked the label (Charisma UK), which I had not previously encountered.A little digging around proved that the band had other albums – all easy enough to find – back then.
The next blip on the Genesis radar for me might’ve been either “Genesis Live” or “Selling England By The Pound” – both of which got a U.S. release. To be honest, in ’72 / ’73, I didn’t have too many people to discuss music with – maybe just my brother and a friend or two from school.Genesis seemed like a “secret”, I suppose. They certainly weren’t being written about anyplace that I was looking (the U.S. music press) – and I didn’t get to buy Melody Maker / Sounds / N.M.E. every single week, so I would have missed the British press that they were getting.
I never got “The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway”, but…I was having a problem with “concept albums” by that time – I also never fully got interested in “Quadrophenia”or “Tales From Topographic Oceans” – double LP’s were too expensive, and “too much info”.Truth is, I had moved on to European music, by the end of ’73 and 1974 – no longer just interested in English-language music exclusively.
I went to work in my first hippie record store in 1976, with a manager who was really into Genesis – “A Trick Of The Tail” was played often, but…I was uneasy about the transition of vocalists that had happened in Genesis.I don’t mind some of the songs on that album, but…I never really got behind Phil Collins as a vocalist.
Flash forward 30+ years – when vinyl died, I got inexpensive UK LP’s of nearly every Charisma label Genesis LP ever issued.I got CD’s of the ones I liked, and then got re-mastered CD’s of 4 of the first 5 x Charisma albums.I got super interested in SACD last summer and so…the first Genesis SACD box seemed a natural purchase for me – of course, the US Rhino copies were not SACD’s.And PAL DVD’s – no problem for the likes of me.
There are certainly bigger Genesis fans than I.I’ve never seen them live. And I still have to work on my appreciation of some of their material.Maybe the SACD format will help this situation.
So, looks like the SACD format isn’t 100% dead! On the internet, I recently found a Universal Music Japan ( = UMJ ) release schedule (for 6/23/10) for the below titles:
UCGU-9001GETZ / GILBERTO *
UCGU-9002JOHN COLTRANE & JOHNNY HARTMAN
UCGU-9003JOHN COLTRANE – A Love Supreme *
UCGU-9004ELLA FITZGERALD & LOUIS ARMSTRONG
UCGU-9005SARAH VAUGHN – Sarah Vaughn
UIGY-9021ROLLING STONES – Let It Bleed *
UIGY-9022THE WHO – Who's Next
UIGY-9023DEREK & THE DOMINOS – Layla *
UIGY-9024ERIC CLAPTON – 461 Ocean Blvd *
UIGY-9025MOODY BLUES – Every Good Boy... *
UIGY-9026STEELY DAN – Aja
UIGY-9027THE POLICE – Synchronicity
UIGY-9028VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO
UIGY-9029ALLMAN BROS. BAND – Fillmore East *
UIGY-9030MARVIN GAYE – What's Going On
This is a very interesting set of releases – many of these have already been SACD’s in the US.I have indicated which US / EU ones I already own with an asterisk (*).I believe that the Rolling Stones and Moody Blues titles have already been SACD’s in Japan. Not sure about the jazz titles. There are also a few UMJ classical titles being issued at this time, but I do not have the details.
These are “single layer” SACD’s – so they are not compatible with regular CD players. They are SHM-SACD’s (SHM = Super High Materials) and cost a whopping 4,500 yen each (not sure if the Allman Bros one is 2CD’s, it’s US counterpart is).
Looks to me that a few titles are making their SACD debuts:The Who “Who’s Next”, Steely Dan “Aja” and “The Velvet Underground & Nico”.I would imagine both The Who and Steely Dan are multi-channel SACD’s, but – the V.U. is probably “SACD stereo only”.I have already chomped at the bit and pre-ordered The Who from amazon.co.jp (who confirm this release).
These are the first new rock SACD’s I have seen that aren’t from Mobile Fidelity.Pretty good titles, too.Glad to see Universal Japan keeping the SACD flag waving.I suppose that if these are limited to 5,000 pieces, UMJ won’t burn their fingers on this release schedule.I can dream:Maybe we’ll get some more titles in a few months? How I would love to see a UMJ SHM-SACD of 10cc “The Original Soundtrack”!
Some of these titles have been re-issued a couple of times each in different formats.
